With overnight stays costing as low as the price of two meals, travelers can save big and relax in comfortable rooms situated right in the heart of the otaku capital.
Finding reasonably priced accommodation in the heart of Akihabara may seem daunting at first, but look hard enough and you’ll find that there are a number of budget capsule hotels available, including one that caters only to women.
Japanese Internet cafes are another option, allowing people who have missed the last train home to indulge in web-surfing and comic-reading before getting some much needed sleep. Kaikatsu CLUB is one such establishment that opened two years ago, but with entry limited to only women. Just recently though, it has decided to allow both sexes to enter its premises.
▼ The facilities look like they’re straight out of a cozy home.
Since the Internet cafe was originally designed for women, some of the interior remains the same, radiating a comfortable and luxurious atmosphere. Shower rooms (requires a small fee), changing rooms and toilets are available, and customers can also freshen up with facial steamers, vibrating massage cushions and hair straighteners borrowed from the front desk for free.
▼ Browse tons of comics to your heart’s content.
The booths themselves are separated into non-smoking and smoking-permitted rooms. Each is equipped with a keycard-lock security feature, a computer and a reclining chair, allowing you to loosen up and relax in the comfort of your own private space.
▼ Every room comes with a soft, reclining chair.
▼ The drink bar is stocked full of refreshments.
▼ If you’re looking for a bit of fun, why not try your hand at darts…
▼ …or a quick game of billiards?
▼ Belt out some anime songs at the karaoke lounge…
▼ …or just sit back and chill with friends in family-sized rooms.
Once you’re all set up, step out into the streets of Akihabara and get some shopping done in a flash. After all, Kaikatsu CLUB is just a three-minute walk from Akihabara Station.
With enough facilities to be a called a hotel, what is perhaps the most astounding of all is that it’s incredibly cheap. The biggest bang for your buck would be the overnight package (7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.), which comes in at an unbelievable 2,047 yen (US$17.90).
The early checkout time might be the only downside to this amazing deal, but can be turned into an advantage for tourists planning to use the Internet cafe as a quick stopover. For those planning to stay longer, perhaps an Internet cafe outfitted with a laundry room, mailbox and just as affordable pricing might be a good option.
